The best of Greg Egan

by Greg Egan

Before moving to my new home in a different corner on this planet, I received this book as a gift from a dear friend! Even with a lot on my plate, I will be reading a new story every now and then. Greg is apparently one of the leading science fiction writers of our time, and most of the stories in this book (20 stories total) are related to technology or STEM in general, which makes it a very compelling and exciting read. Looking forward to taking a much needed break from our real world and catching my breath elsewhere.

[#1: Learning to be me]: Very interesting story! It illustrates how hard it is to define the 'I' in this life. We replace legs, arms, hearts and many other organs with artifical counterparts, but this never causes such a dilemma. However, the moment we talk about replacing the 'brain', it becomes something else. Fascinating
[#1: Learning to be me]: When talking about a digital copy of the brain, does that include feelings too? If yes, doesn't that mean AI can learn how to 'feel'?
[#1: Learning to be me]: This story is a beautiful intersection between Tech and Philosophy.
[#1: Learning to be me]: Even though this is supposed to be sci-fi, it feels like it's a few years away from happening in real life!
[#1: Learning to be me]: What allows people to be so creative when it comes to the mind and the brain is the fact that we still do not understand what consciousness is. Solving this mystery will significantly restrict imagination.
